About Pod Heritage
The Pod brand has upheld its reputation as a trusted household name for over three decades, known for producing quality comfort footwear. But how did it all begin? Read on to discover more about the brand you know and love...Step back in time to 1976, to a little known town called Rushden, right in the heart of the shoe-manufacturing county of Northamptonshire. The platform era was very much coming to an end and as Americana trends hit UK shores the Lois & Levi look soon replaced the flared fashion that had become synonymous with that decade.
The shift in fashion left a real gap in the footwear market and the public was crying out for fresh new footwear to complement their new style. So, during the long hot summer of '76, the Pod brand was established by two gents, who shared the same conviction to produce cutting-edge unisex footwear which combined comfort, style and durability to the every day shoe. Together they created the original jean shoe.
Their first creation to spring out of the Pod box was the iconic Pin-Punch shoe, designed with the perforated uppers to keep feet cool and comfy during the summer months. The Quilted design (known up-north as the mattress front) was released soon after as a cosy winter alternative. The innovative use of padded and perforated vamps mixed with softy leathers in blues, reds, yellows and even pinks was a revelation to the footwear market and the unique construction gave the shoes a comfort factor like no other.
Before you could pop on a pair of pods, the phenomenon had reached the hub of London's counter-culture; King's Road and alongside the latest fashion boutiques the first ever Pod shop was opened.
With it's greatest success further North, the brand soon became a household name and even the Podman leather swingtags became the latest swap & collect craze.
As the grunge era approached the UK towards the late '80s, fashion turned yet another corner and Pod responded with an aggressive new look; the heavy-duty razor sole. It was then decided that the original Pod designs should be temporarily stored away until the time was right for their re-appearance.
Now, after 30 years since their initial launch, the iconic shoes are back under the Pod Heritage name for a full retro revival. The original designs have been taken straight out of the Pod archive and with a little creative direction from the original designer, the collection has most definitely held onto its '76 soul.
